Race: My favorite race is the one that actually happened AFTER the 2008 Ouachita Challenge.
Someone on the team came up with the idea to have an enchilada eating contest at On the Border restaurant in Hot Springs.
The goal…whoever eats the most enchiladas in a 30 minute time frame was the winner. “THE RACE”
was on!! Several entered but the main contenders were Chris Block, Kevin Williams, and Wes Pruitt.
It was neck and neck and forks looked like shovels as they scooped food into their mouths. The race really became
a 2 part race. The first race to eat the most enchiladas was won by Kevin and the 2nd race, which was to
the restroom, was won by Wes. Way to go guys!! Haydn had nightmares for at least a week after witnessing
the carnage that occurred at the dinner table that evening!
Best Finish: Some first place,
some last, and everything in between…just finishing is actually “the best”! I am
most proud of the 2007 season when Zane, Haydn, and myself all won the state title in our respective classes.
In 2008, Zane and I also won the state title in each of our Sport/Cat 2 classes. 2009 is looking really good for
Zane to take another state title but I am fully committed to stepping up to the plate and riding sweep for the Cat 1 class…..
Favorite Riding Food: Anything, just hand
me a plate!
What are
your riding goals? There are many. As far as racing is concerned, my biggest goal
is to keep Zane from lapping me. He tends to be sarcastic as he comes up behind me and passes me. Other goals
are simple…have fun and don’t get hurt...enjoy fellowship with family and friends!
Why do you ride? Fun, Family,
Friends, Food,…..FELLOWSHIP!
What
advice would you give to a beginner rider? Have fun & introduce someone new to mountain biking!
Grow the sport! Volunteer and do some trail work. Also, ditch the MP3 player…you are missing out
on the wonderful sounds of nature and if you listen really close you can probably hear me gasping for air somewhere in the
distance as I try and keep up with Zane.
Worst Wipeout: I had a wreck years ago on the Little Blakely trails.
The actual wreck was minor, my front end washed out on a downhill turn. When I went down, my knee slid across
a very, very, sharp rock. I cut my knee open and could see my knee cap. I managed to ride out and went to the
doctor to get cleaned up and sewn up. Within 24 hours Carol had to take me to the Emergency Room because my leg had
become swollen from infection. Surgeons had to open my knee back up and redo everything. The rock had cut my patellar
tendon and scraped my bone. I ended up with a week long hospital stay and missed work for almost 2 months. Now
that I am slower I miss less work.
